The incidence of Lyme disease overall in the United States is 1 in 2719 individuals, and although the illness is likely underreported, the rate is much higher in hyper-endemic areas such as the northeast part of the country. The 15-year mean annual rate for all states ranges from less than .01 cases per 100,000 populations in Montana and Colorado, to 74 cases per 100,000 in Connecticut. Neurological involvement can occur in up to 20% of those with confirmed infections.
